John Ray was part of the Gucci design team, under the creative direction of Tom Ford. Following Ford’s departure from Gucci, Mr Ray also decided to step down. For the following 8 years he chose to remain out of the fashion world and very much out of the public view. So when struggling British brand Alfred Dunhill appointed him as Creative Director last year it was to much surprise. By now it’s clear that this return was a stroke of genius. So far his collections have been received extremely well, but more importantly he’s bringing about a fundamental change across the entire brand.
This thoroughly modern gentleman has shown the upmost respect for a well established organisation and is working to honour – rather than re-invent it.
Last month he unveiled his spring/summer collection at London Collections: Men and once again proved that his move from Italian fashion giant to iconic London based brand was the start of fruitful (very British) revival.
